Handgun Qualification License - 4 Hour Class

Yes, you still need an HQL in Maryland!

Two options available to fit your schedule:
A carpool-friendly weekday class and a Sunday class that will allow you to apply for your
Maryland Handgun Qualification License.
Protect yourself and your family.
Learn shooting fundamentals in a relaxed and patient environment. This is serious but also fun.
Required live shooting component can be scheduled separately.

In order to purchase a handgun in the state of Maryland, you need to obtain an HQL, or Handgun Qualification License.

In order to apply for this license you must take a 4-hour class that covers specific topics as well as shoot on the range.

Classroom topics include:

  • Gun safety, handling and storage
  • Types of guns & ammo
  • Types of gun ownership
  • Grip, stance, sight alignment, trigger control
  • Shooting fundamentals
  • Stoppages/malfunctions
  • Maryland State Firearm laws
  • Home Firearm Safety
  • Handgun Mechanisms and Operations

Once you have completed the course, you must be fingerprinted, have a criminal background check, and complete an application on the Maryland State Police website.
